  Week 36 May 31-June 3 Kiwanis Park Day Note change: We will now leave school at 10:30.   Information came home Friday about this change as well as lunch order forms.  The school will provide bag lunches, but if you prefer to send your own please indicate this on the form provided.  Please send any lunches from home in disposable packaging.  Teachers will provide water.  Parents are welcome to join us! School lunches are not available for parents. We could use some large coolers.  If you have one that you’re willing to loan us for the day, please label it with your name and teacher’s name, and leave it in the school foyer Monday morning.  They will be available for pick up that afternoon in the same spot.  Note: please apply sunscreen before school.  Students may bring sunscreen to reapply.  Teachers are not allowed to apply sunscreen to children.   Week 35 May 23-27 End of year Happenings There is A LOT going on!  Countdown Today we will be starting a countdown to the end of the school year.  Each day will have a special theme.  Please check with your child every night until the end of the year to see what the special day is for the following day.  Today we will be popping our first balloon of the countdown!  Game Day-May 27 1:00-3:00pm in the courtyard.  This is for the entire First Grade.   Week 34 May 16-20 Animal Projects Wow! These have been so wonderful to see.  The children have been so proud to share their work with each other.  Thank you! Parent Help We will need parent volunteers for a potentially very messy task on Friday, May 20, at 3:00. Please bring your staplers and come help us on Monday, June 6, at 12:00. Please let me know if you’re able to help!  These are things I cannot do alone.  

  Week 33 May 9-13 Teacher Appreciation Week Thank you all so much for an amazingly encouraging week.  I loved all the lovely flowers and incredibly generous gifts. I found great encouragement in the numerous notes from students and kind words from parents.  Thank you! It is an honor and privilege to teach your children. Animal Project The work your child has been doing in class will home home monday. Hopefully this information will help you to complete projects together.  If your child has only completed a couple of pages in the packet, please encourage them to work on it at home.     Projects are due on May 13. Home Stretch! The countdown to the end of the school year has begun.   Week 31 April 25-29 NWEA Math testing dates: April 26th and 27th Please be sure your child’s computer is charged! Field Trip Hurray!  We will be going to Sarett Nature Center on Thursday, April 28.  We will ride the bus.  If you would like to meet us there you are more than welcome to do so.  The cost for parents is $5.  This can be paid upon arrival at Sarett.  Animal Project Choice Boards will be sent home Monday.  Please review these together and help your child decide which projects he or she would like to complete. The idea of a due date is brand new to Firsties.  We will discuss this in class and talk about pacing.  Please help us reinforce this idea. 

NWEA ELA testing dates: April 19, 20, 21 Math testing dates: April 26, 27, 28     I try hard to make this a nonthreatening experience.  However, it is important that the children take the testing seriously so that we get the best information possible.  Please discuss this with your child and encourage them to do their best.  Many will need to be reminded that it’s not a race!   Week 29 April 11-15 Welcome back to the routine! We have so much yet to learn this year! Students will be very busy in our remaining 9 weeks together. Practice at Home In order to prepare your Firstie for the move to 2nd grade please be sure to spend time on the following every week: Nightly reading Addition and subtraction flashcards Lexia IXL or Moby RAZ kids, Storyline Online, or EPIC Journaling Animal Project First Graders will be VERY busy in the coming weeks researching an animal and creating a variety of projects to show their understanding of its physical characteristics, habitat, food sources, and predators.  Information will be coming home in your child’s Friday folder this week for your review and signature. While most of the research will be done at school, the projects will be completed at home.

  Week 28 March 28-31 Spring is in the air!  The students seem ready for a much-deserved break. They’ve been working very hard.  This break has a tendency to feel like the finish line.  Please help us by reminding your Firstie that we still have a lot of learning yet to come this year! We have 9 more weeks of growth ahead of us! Please let me know if you will be leaving early for break. This will help with plans for the week.   Week 24 February 28-March 4 Academic Updates We will: Focus on the “ar” sound in words like: charm, warm, alarm, bark, star Do several assessments in order to have very recent data for report cards More writing and editing Review addition and subtraction strategies Create maps Performance! Mark your calendars! On March 23 all Lincoln Firsties will take the stage! The three first grade classrooms will be performing a musical revue called Pajama Party.  Children will be asked to wear their pajamas, slippers, and robes on this day.  Children will perform for the school during the day.  In the evening, there will be a performance for the families in the auditorium at St. Joseph High School. More details, including times, to follow. **Each child has a speaking part.  Please check for these in their homework folder on Monday.
